Happy NHL Free Agency Day to all who celebrate! A lot to track today, but we at least know that Patrick Kane is staying in Detroit for another year. Look for any free agent signings to officially happen anytime after noon today.
Red Wings Rumblings
All eyes are on Steven Stamkos right now. According to reports from legendary insider Bob Mckenzie, there are about a half-dozen teams trying to sign the star centerman — including the Detroit Red Wings. Anything can change, but it doesn’t seem like Tampa will be re-signing Stamkos. Word is that the Bolts are handing out what is believed to be the richest deal of free agency to Jake Guentzel.
As for Jacob Trouba — those rumors have cooled off since it was reported that the Rangers were set to deal the defenseman to Detroit. Larry Brooks from the New York Post has some perspective and insight in his latest article:
“If Trouba does not approve a trade to Detroit that is believed in place, he will ultimately be sent somewhere else, perhaps by waivers. The decision has been made.”
Darren Dreger reported this morning that Trouba’s no move clause (NMC) shifted to a modified no trade clause (NTC), and his 15 team no-trade list has been submitted.
The Red Wings are also in the market for a goaltender, but it’s not clear if they will strike a trade or look to free agent options. Last rumor I read stated that Yzerman was kicking tires on Anaheim’s John Gibson, a deal that could still happen. I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw some more cap shedding from Detroit as well… Still gotta get Mo Seider and Lucas Raymond re-signed, among other RFAs.
In other news, Red Wings Development Camp gets underway today at Little Caesars Arena. You can find the schedule and other details over on the team’s website.
